Meet our Artist-in-Residence

Damita Hicks

I am Damita (Momita) Hicks. I use the name Momita because I feel like I’m a mom to everyone – I care about all people.

I have been an artist since the age of 8 or 9 years old. I use several different mediums for my artwork such as pencil, color pencil, pastels, water color, acrylics, and oil. I have developed my own way of painting with crayons – that I taught myself – that I call “Crayonhicks.”

I really enjoy painting with crayons because of the fine details I’m able to do with my method. I consider myself a life long learner. I am currently using my art as a way to bring about racial healing and I do presentations with several of my crayon paintings. The main painting that I’m focused on is the painting I call, Mama A’Free’ca. This painting is very special because it shows the connections of everyone to Africa, because we all have the DNA marker that connects all of us to humanity’s birthplace.
